- Technical Discussion about Constant Current Pulse Width Modulated LED lights -

While LED lights which use "constant current pulse width modulation" are a superior product in that they maintain a constant light temperature (i.e. no yellow/blue color shift in the white light spectrum) when they are dimmed and they can be dimmed from 0-100%, the power supply/light can and do produce some amount of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). This phenomenon is related to all PWM dimming devices including those found in homes. EMI/RFI filtering is built into such devices to attenuate levels to meet FCC regulations.

While this will not cause problems for most installations, certain electronics located close to PWM devices may be affected. Long unbalanced audio lines may act as an antenna to bring EMI/RFI into electronics. Audio electronics designed without typical input filtering may demodulate the EMI/RFI causing the PWM signal to be heard as a tone.

The use of the toroid choke that is on the Solare 24 volt dc power supply cord that comes with Model G-4100-14-24 is intended to reduce most EMI/RFI. However, if you intend to use a Solare LED light near sensitive or critical equipment and do not need the full 2500 lux brightness, then it is recommended that you use Model G-4100-14-12 which comes with the alternative 12 volt dc power supply. The full brightness light output will be reduced 46% of that produced with the 24 volt supply - which is still plenty bright - but tests have shown that EMI/RFI will be negligible.

If you buy the 24 volt version and encounter interference, you may exchange the power supply for the 12 volt version.

FCC Class A Notice

This equipment complies with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a business/industrial/commercial environment installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that the interference will not occur in a particular installation. Operation is subject to the following two conditions:

  1. This device may not cause harmful interference.
  2. This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.

Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference, in which case the user will be required to correct the interference at his own expense. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:

Mounting and Wire Routing

The light has a machined alumunum base with four threaded 6-32 holes in the base corners. This allows for secure mounting. An optional base is available for converting the Solare base for screw or sticky tape mounting.

The base is designed for the power cable to exit the base using a thru-hole routing, or the exit the base from the rear using flush mounting as depicted in this image.

Packaging

Each unit is industrial packed with foam padding to protect the contents.
